Share Your World – Week 13

The first Spring installment of Cee’s Share Your World challenge is here! AND it’s my birthday, so there ya go – a two-fer 🙂

What was your favorite subject in school?

All of them. Really. I loved school. The other kids, not so much, but I loved learning. There were a couple of teachers in High School who made their subjects suck for me (biology and algebra) but by and large I loved every subject.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away” (George Carlin). When have you had such a moment?

The moment I changed my phone number and deleted my email account so the narc could no longer contact me. It was my first real taste of freedom!

What’s your choice: jigsaw, crossword, or numeric puzzles?

Crossword. Numeric puzzles piss me off and I live with an asshole cat so jigsaw puzzles are out of the question :-/

If you found an obviously abandoned car with $50,000 in the back seat, what would you do?

Walk quickly away – it’s a trap!

March just whizzed right by, didn’t it? Hard to believe it’s April already! I’m busier than a one-armed paper hanger (is that phrase totally outdated?) and thrilled Spring is here.

Happy hump day!

Share Your World – Weeks 11 & 12

Well! Looks like I’ve fallen behind on Cee’s Share Your World Challenge, so this week I offer up two installments –

Week 11

List 2 things you have to be happy about?

Don’t hate me but I can’t even think of two things I have to NOT be happy about. Srsly. Happy about everything in my life right now. Well, my couch and I haven’t had any quality time together, but other than that it really is All Good.

Do you prefer ketchup or mustard or mayonnaise?

Ketchup by a landslide. I don’t eat mustard or mayo unless it’s by mistake. I know, I know! I’m a freak and I embrace my freakishness.

If you were to paint a picture of your childhood, what colors would you use?

Shades of gray I guess. I loved school but hated the other kids so nothing stands out.

Do you prefer a bath or shower?

I love to soak in a tub with lots of bubbles and a good book but haven’t had access for a few years now, so I guess I prefer a shower by default.

Week 12

When was the last time you sat on a park or garden bench for more than ten minutes? Describe the occasion.

When the weather is good I like to sit on a bench at the dog park a few times a week. It’s more fun if there are lots of dogs chasing each other around, but watching Sabu can also be entertaining.

Would you ever be interested in observing a surgery or do you turn away when the nurse brings out the needle?

I dunno. On the one hand, it’s interesting, but I wouldn’t want to risk passing out and embarrassing myself. I would like to try, I think.

Where’s your favorite place to take out-of-town guests?

Anywhere but here 🙂 My little town is not very interesting, even to we who live here, so I’m not sure where I’d take anyone. A cruise through the local antique shops? The dog park? I just don’t know…Luckily I rarely have guests 🙂

If you had an unlimited shopping spree at only one store, which one would you choose? Why?

Would I have to do all my shopping in one go, or would this spree last for my lifetime? I would choose a large fabric store in either case because I like to make stuff.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Last week was pretty busy and I’m grateful that I have so many things going on. I got more work from The Other Boss which will go towards getting a new awning for Towanda and I got my taxes done and don’t owe any money. Awana and I will be at the High Desert Wool Growers annual fiber sale this Saturday peddling our wares which should be a ton of fun – I always look forward to the fiber sales!

Share Your World – Week 10

It’s Hump Day once again and time for another installment of Cee’s Share Your World challenge.

This week’s questions:

When you lose electricity in a storm, do you light the candles or turn on the flashlight? How many of each do you own?

Neither, actually. The only candles I own are scented gel candles I made when I was working at the candle factory in Newport and those are only lit to drive out the odor of The Kid.

I have at least half a dozen flashlights stashed around the place and one in the pocket of whatever jacket I’m wearing at the time. Flashlights in a travel trailer are a must – every cabinet is too deep and/or located nowhere near a light fixture or window and if you want to see into the murky depths you must bring your own light.

When the power goes out I don’t notice unless the TV is on as the cable box quits working. I keep Towanda’s batteries charged up so a power outage doesn’t change my routine. The stove, fridge and hot water heater all run on propane and the lights are all LED and draw very little power from the batteries.

The furnace also runs on propane but the furnace fan is electric, making a prolonged power outage a problem if the weather is very cold as it will draw down the batteries in no time at all. I need to research a different heat source and have been toying with the idea of a tiny wood stove. I think I have the installation bugs worked out but will have to find an affordable tiny stove option.

You are given $5,000 and the chance to exchange it for one of two envelopes. One envelope contains $50,000 and one contains $500. Do you make the trade? Why or why not?

I’d keep the $5K. It’s not a small amount and I could finance a lot of projects with that kind of dough. Sure, 50K would be great, but why risk ending up with only $500 when 10 times that much is already in my hand?

What’s your first memory?

I honestly don’t know if my earliest “memories” are real or the pictures planted in my head of the stories told around them. Right at this moment my mind is blank.

What do you do if you can’t sleep at night? Do you count sheep, toss and turn, or get up and try to do something?

Hahahahahahahaha! Trouble falling asleep is not a problem I have ever had. Sometimes I can’t stay asleep or I wake too early, but falling asleep is not an issue. If I wake up during the night it’s usually for a reason, like needing to turn the water on to keep the pipes from freezing, so repeating that routine (get up, use the bathroom, turn on the kitchen faucet for 30 seconds or so, go back to bed) is enough to send me back to sleep.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

My Kid got a job! A job where he won’t be in my space 24/7! A job that requires him to shower every day and brush his teeth and keep his shoes clean! I am so grateful he will be somewhere other than in my pocket for 30 hours a week and looking forward to a long and continued employment so he can move out on his own for good.

That makes me sound like a Bad Mom, doesn’t it? People don’t want to hear this sort of thing. Noreen, the park manager, is just thrilled that I have my “baby” back at home “where he belongs” and can’t get over how lucky I am. I try not to sneer, but holy fuck I already did this and isn’t it my turn to have a life?

I mean, he’s great, really. We have very similar personalities and he’s respectful about the space and walks the dog and lets the cat boss around someone other than me, but Towanda has been a penis-free zone for two years and opening the door and smelling MAN is Just Not Right.

I’m here for him as long as he needs me and I would never kick him out on his ass (although I have had a couple of vivid daydreams) but he needs to GO be an adult somewhere else.

Anyone else feel that way about their adult kids? Just me? Am I a horrible person?

Share Your World – Week 9

After a weekend spent in bed with The Crud that swept through the office, the latest edition of Cee’s Share Your World challenge may be all I have to offer this week as I play catch-up with everything else going on. Here ya go –

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

19 on a good day, but appearances would make a liar of me 🙂 I don’t feel old in body, just in spirit some times.

Are you left or right handed?

Right handed, no doubt. Many of my hobbies involve using both hands, but I don’t consider myself ambidextrous.

If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to?

Sofia Leo is the name I chose for myself and I would change it legally if I needed to.

Where do you hide junk when people come over?

Ha! There is no place to hide anything in a travel trailer! The necessities are in cupboards but everything else is out where anyone can see it. I don’t have a lot of things that aren’t valuable to my life in some way (shut up, Awana!) and when people come over I hope they’re there to see me and not my stuff. Yes, it’s a bit cluttered, even more so now that The Kid is living with me, but I think it’s still homey.

Share Your World – Week 8

Here’s my latest submittal to Cee’s Share Your World challenge.

Your favorite blog post that you have written? (add link)

Generally speaking, the next one 🙂 I always think of clever, witty things to write about, composing posts in my head, but when the time comes to put words to “paper” either I’m fitting it in between other things or the words just don’t come or it’s been too long since I had the idea it’s no longer relevant like the 50 Shades of WTF post written only in my head – that ship has sailed, manned by writers far more witty than I.

If I had to choose a post, this one is a favorite, not because it’s written well but because it documents my first day of freedom. I Hate Curry has continued to be a very popular post if the stats are to be believed. Whores Get Paid is a favorite of mine that illustrates the way narcs and their ilk view sex. This is Getting Old contains my favorite zinger – You don’t need to quit drinking, you need to quit being a dick. Alcohol does not change who you are, it just lessens your inhibitions – what you think actually makes it out of your mouth. You are capable and willing to slice me in half sober or drunk, that’s the Real Problem.

Wow. I shouldn’t have gone reading back – kinda pissed off all over again now…

What do you feel is the most enjoyable way to spend $500? Why?

I recently bought a new set of tires for my car to the tune of $513 and it was quite satisfying. I know, right? It’s a party a minute here! Srsly, I was pleased to have the money to buy the tires, happy to be able to replace all four at once and thrilled that no one was hassling me about where I spent my money. I quite like all my shit to be in good working order 🙂

If you could know the answer to any question, besides “What is the meaning of life?”, what would it be?

I would love to know “where the fuck is the Karma Bus and does it make me a bad person for wanting to see it run over someone who deserves it?”

Where do you eat breakfast?

During the week, nowhere. On the weekend I sometimes eat on the go, often in the car, but sometimes standing in the “kitchen.” Generally just toast and tea for breakfast. I prefer my main meal around 1130 and eat it at my desk at work during the week or at the table on the weekend since my couch is being held hostage for the time being…

Share Your World – Week 7

While we have no blooming tulips (do click that link – they’re gorgeous!) today, we do have Cee’s Share Your World challenge –

Is the paper money in your possession right now organized sequentially according to denomination and with the bills right side up and facing the same way?

Is there any other way to organize them? Srsly. I know, I know! I’m so Old Fashioned. When I worked retail a couple of years ago I was appalled at how the young kids just shoved the bills in willy-nilly with no regard for facing them or even making sure they weren’t all wrinkled in the slot. Even the bank doesn’t bother facing the bills any more!

What is your favorite type of dog?  (can be anything from a specific breed, a stuffed animal or character in a movie)

My favorite dog is a Good Dog. They come in all shapes and sizes. I see them on the street, at the dog park and in passing cars. Sadly, none of them lives at my house…

If money was not an issue, would you go on a cruise?  If so where would you go?

BTDT. It was an experience. I might go again in the right company but it’s not likely that I’d book a cruise for myself.

Would you dare to sleep in haunted house overnight?

You betcha! The only ghosts that can hurt us are those in our own minds 🙂

Share Your World – Week 6

Another Wednesday and another installment of Cee’s Share Your World Challenge.

What was the last time you went to a new place?

I go to new places all the time. Is this about a new city? That would be Las Vegas last month. Or a new place in a familiar city? That would be a hospital in Portland to visit a very sick friend. It’s a long (and long overdue) story. Or a new place in my current town? That would be a new-ish diner on main street for a hot dog and fries.

If you were or are a writer do you prefer writing short stories, poems or novels, other?  And what type of genre would you prefer?

Fictionalized autobiographies would be my genre and the length would have to be dependent on the story being told – some stories can be summed up with a haiku, others require 300 pages.

Out of your five senses (touch, taste, sight, smell, hearing) which is your favorite?

Touch, no doubt.

If 100 people your age were chosen at random, how many do you think you’d find leading a more satisfying life than yours?

None. Oh, they might think they have it going on, but I’m betting I’m happier than they will ever be. Being happy is a choice I make every day and I will never again let the assholes get me down!

Sadly (or not so sadly) work is very busy this week and I have little time to flesh out this post [nsert vague promises to blog more in the near future here]

Share Your World – Week 5

Time is just flying by, isn’t it? Here’s the latest from Cee’s Share Your World Challenge:

Do you prefer shopping or going to a park?

I’ll take the park any day, especially if there’s an off-leash dog area 🙂 Just don’t have the patience for shopping in large stores any more – I swear walking into Crap-Mart sucks 10 IQ points right out of your head for every 10 minutes you breathe the air.

If you were a shoe, what kind would you be and why?

20140918_114711I am custom-made leather mocs with thick soles – like a second skin but tough enough to Get Shit Done. Brown, nothing flashy.

What’s the story behind a time when you got locked out?

The only thing I’ve ever been locked out of was the narc’s online accounts 🙂 I do not get locked out. Of anything. Ever. There’s always a way in – I could have cracked his passwords but chose to let it go.

Do you prefer eating foods with nuts or no nuts?

No nuts for me, thanks. I have too much dental work yet to get done and nuts are too much of a risk.

And so Wednesday comes to a close. Oh, wait. It’s still morning. Crap. Better get back to work…

Share Your World – Week 4

Already Week 4 of 2015? Time does fly. Here’s the latest from Cee’s Share Your World challenge –

Where did you live at age five?  Is it the same place or town you live now?

Hood River, Oregon, on June Street right next door to Granny & Grandpa, my Mom’s parents. I don’t live anywhere near there now, but Mom still lives in the same town.

You are invited to a party that will be attended by many fascinating people you never met.  Would you attend this party if you were to go by yourself?

Absolutely! Why not? I might stand in a corner all night, but I’d be there, right?

Did you grow up in a small or big town? Did you like it?

I grew up in a small town and liked it for the most part. The Big City was only an hour away but we didn’t go much. I don’t recall feeling like I missed out on anything a larger town had to offer, but now I know better and am grateful The Big City is close enough to visit from time to time.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A professional woman. I always wanted to be independent and self-sufficient, to not have to rely on anyone else for anything. Not sure where that came from, but when I discovered I had a talent for drafting I knew it would be the answer to my dream. I thought I would be working with architects, drawing works of art that would become historical buildings one day, helping to change the face of whatever city I lived in. The reality is the money is in engineering and very few architects get to design history-in-the-making buildings. Had I known then what I know now I might have returned to school to get an engineering degree despite all the math, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Whew! There ya go. Things are going on behind the scenes here as I try to get my Virtual House in order. Y’all may remember that I do Fiber Stuff and 2015 is the year I make a big push to get it out onto the interwebs and try to make enough cash to fund some upcoming projects. To that end I’ve been editing and re-branding my knitting patterns and fleshing out my website while also brainstorming ideas about a joint website and web presence for The Sweatshop Girls. There are Big Ideas floating around The Studio and it’s time to make them a reality!

Share Your World – Weeks 2 & 3

Okay, folks, I’m back from vacation and feeling snarky, but not about Cee’s fab Share Your World challenge.

Questions from Week 2 –

Are you a hugger or a non-hugger?

Oh, for the love of all that’s holy, keep your hands off me! I do not hug strangers and I loathe the way they look at me like I strangle kittens for fun when I put up a hand and say, “no, I’d rather not” when they hold their arms out. I mean, really? I don’t know what kind of germs you harbor and I don’t want my boobs to become part of your next fantasy, ifyouknowwhatImeanandIthinkyoudo.

What’s your favorite ice-cream flavor?

Chocolate. If it has fudge or chips or chunks of chocolate mixed in it’s even better. Not cookie dough, though.

Do you prefer exercising your mind or your body? How frequently do you do either?

Hahahahahahahaha! I exercise my body only under duress. I exercise my wit on my co-workers all week long. Does that count?

Are you more of a dog person or a cat person? Why?

While I have both living with me now, I’d have to say that I identify most with cats. They prefer to be warm and dry and aren’t known for eating unidentifiable stuff laying on the sidewalk. True, the litter box needs to be cleaned, but if you have a dog around even that chore isn’t too onerous 🙂

Questions from Week 3 –

Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

Alive – Benedict Cumberbatch and Jimmy Kimmel. What a hoot that would be!
Dead – Elizabeth Zimmermann, a world famous knitter who espoused many of my philosophies. She’s worth a blog post all her own. I’ll get right on that…

When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

I don’t usually sing out loud, really. In the car. Okay, maybe this morning on my way to work, but the only witness was Sabu 🙂

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

The ability to be invisible so I could be a fly on the wall anywhere I wanted to. People fascinate me. They also repulse me so I’m figuring if I was invisible I could observe and not have to interact – perfect for an introvert.

What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?

It’s all about perspective and sometimes jokes can lighten an otherwise grim situation. Context is also important and one must be kind if at all possible, but I don’t think anything is too serious to be joked about.

And that’s all we have time for this morning, folks! We will try to get back to regular blogging here and elsewhere on the interwebs but now we must get to work, earning those dollars for kibble.
